Routine Eye Examinations

Routine Eye Examinations | MiamiRoutine eye examinations are a necessity for adults and children alike. The likelihood of developing many eye diseases and problems increases as we age. In fact, one out of three people will have an eye disease by age 65, and one out of two by age 80. More than 10% of the United States population has some form of eye disease; two million have glaucoma, another two million have macular degeneration and 26 million have cataracts. Blurry vision, itchy twitchy eyes? Your mother and aunt have glaucoma but you are feeling fine?  Many eye diseases do not have noticeable symptoms. Regular eye exams can help detect and treat eye problems early on. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommends a comprehensive eye evaluation every one to two years for people aged 65 and older.  Children should have an exam prior to entering school.  If you feel that you would really like a good opinion about the general health of your eyes, we can provide that information. The bilingual staff is dedicated to making your experience as pleasant and on-time as possible.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery also known as blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure involving the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. The procedure can give you a rejuvenated appearance making you look more rested and more alert. Blepharoplasty can treat loose and excessive skin which may be making it difficult to apply makeup to the upper eyelids or it might be so advanced so as to make driving difficult. Some individuals have a tendency to accumulate fat below the eyelids creating a baggy appearance for the lower eyelids and a puffy appearance for the upper lids. This seems to be an inherited characteristic. During routine blepharoplasty, this fat can be removed.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be performed on healthy adults. There is really no upper age limit. Only your outlook on life and specific goals limits you. While it is not common, I have operated women in their late 80’s and early 90’s. One limiting factor is the use of aspirin and/or anticoagulants such as Plavix. In some cases, the discontinuance of these drugs allows for the procedure to go forward.

Eyelid surgery is performed in our adjacent surgery center. We use local anesthesia with an anesthetist standing bye to provide enough sedation so there is no discomfort or anxiety. A four-eyelid procedure takes about one hour. Patients leave the operating suite and are recovered for about one half hour during which time ice is applied to the eyelids. When you leave, you will be fully alert and ready to care for yourself at home. We will see you the following day to check the wound and answer any questions. The stitches are removed at one week.

Many insurance companies (including Medicare and Medicaid) will pay for blepharoplasty if certain criteria are met. Dr. Gelber will evaluate your condition and make the recommendation to your company if it appears that you are a candidate for insurance coverage. If you are not a candidate for insurance coverage, we make financing an easy process.

Dr. Gelber has had extensive training and experience with cosmetic eyelid surgery. He will be pleased to discuss your specific needs during a consultation.

JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel

Juvederm | MiamiJUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is an injectable gel that gently reverses many signs of aging in the face, including fine lines and wrinkles, crow's feet, thinning lips and loosening skin. It can also "plump up" the lips, sculpt the cheeks, and restore a youthful oval shape to the face. It is made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin. Because it is non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment testing is needed. JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel comes in three formulas optimized for the depth of the area being treated. Results last about 6-9 months and can be made to last even longer with a simple follow-up treatment a few weeks after the initial injection.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion rejuvenates the skin, removing dead skin cells and impurities and can reduce fine lines and minor imperfections.

Microdermabrasion using the PowerPeel technology is a safe and painless alternative to laser resurfacing and chemical peels and requires no recovery time.  A cleansing toner is first applied to the skin to remove excess oils for better application and penetration. The device then delivers fine, sanitary aluminum oxide crystals to the face that "sand blasts" away dead skin and impurities. Afterwards a soothing toner is applied to the face and then a re-hydrating cream and sun block are applied. The process is repeated several times over a few weeks. New healthy skin cells move to the surface creating healthier, younger looking skin.  The desired effect of significant texture and color improvements will continue with time.
