Edward C. Gelber, M.D., F.A.C.S
After completion of his ophthalmology residency at The Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Gelber along with his wife and two young boys came to Miami to complete his training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. While his wife pursued a law degree at University of Miami, Dr. Gelber completed his Fellowship year where he specialized in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma. In 1975, at the conclusion of the year of study he opened an office for the private practice of general ophthalmology.
The surgical techniques employed in eye surgery were undergoing rapid change beginning in the mid-70's and Dr. Gelber embraced many of these new concepts. He was one of the first surgeons in Miami to perform cataract surgery using phacoemulsification methods; then revolutionary, now routine. Intraocular lens implantation at the time of cataract surgery was in its infancy as Dr. Gelber implanted his first lens in 1976. To date he has performed more than 15,000 cataract surgeries. Dr. Gelber remains at the cutting edge of new cataract technologies combining astigmatism correction at the time of lens implantation, implanting multifocal (bifocal) intraocular lenses and performing lens surgery for the correction of extreme amounts of nearsightedness and farsightedness.
With the advent in 1982 of radial keratotomy (RK) for the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism, Dr. Gelber became proficient in that area. He performed several thousand RK's as well as publishing and lecturing on the subject. This interest in refractive surgery lead to his early involvement with the excimer laser (1986). This laser has evolved through five generations to the current devise used for LASIK surgery. Dr. Gelber performed his first laser correction of nearsightedness (PRK) in 1996. Dr. Gelber currently does LASIK surgery on his private patients at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Recognizing a need for cost effective delivery of eye surgery, Dr. Gelber established (1985) the first Medicare Licensed office-based eye surgery facility in South Florida. All forms of eye surgery are performed under local anesthesia in an operating room adjacent to the clinical areas. The anxiety of "going to the hospital" was eliminated while preserving all the safeguards and high standards of a State licensed operating room.
Dr. Gelber provides consultations in glaucoma, cataract, LASIK, dry eye treatment and plastic surgical correction of various eyelid problems. If you are interested in discussing over-all facial rejuvenation, Dr. Gelber can be of help with BOTOX® as well as fillers such as JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel. The practice offers comprehensive eye examinations for routine well care and second opinions in all areas of ophthalmology.
